Classrooms are empty across Oyo this morning because teachers have downed tools, saying they will not return until their abducted colleagues and pupils are brought home safe.
It is official. From today, Monday 1 June 2026, every public primary and secondary school teacher in Oyo State is staying at home. The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) gave the order, and it is indefinite.
Why? On 15 May, armed men stormed Community Grammar School, Baptist Nursery and Primary School, and L.A. Primary School in the Ogbomoso area, in Oriire LGA. They took teachers, pupils and residents. More than two weeks later, the union says the victims are still in captivity and their fate “remains uncertain”.
The NUT says fear is now running through staff rooms and playgrounds. Parents are too scared to send children to school, and whole communities are on edge. The strike, the union explains, is meant to force the authorities to act faster.
In a circular signed by the Oyo NUT chairman, Comrade Hassan Fatai, teachers were told to comply fully, stay law-abiding, and remain safe at home. The national leadership added that it will keep engaging government behind closed doors, but it will not send members back into classrooms until there is a rescue.
The timing is sharp. On Sunday, President Bola Tinubu ordered the recruitment of 1,000 forest guards specifically to secure the release of the Oyo victims. A heavyweight federal delegation also landed in Ogbomoso the same day – Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, Minister of Defence Christopher Musa, IGP Olatunji Disu, Minister of Power Joseph Tegbe and presidential media adviser Sunday Dare. Gbajabiamila told grieving families the president shares their pain and has ordered all security agencies to bring everyone back alive.
Governor Seyi Makinde was in Ogbomoso on Saturday too. He called the abduction of underage children unprecedented, pleaded for patience, and asked residents not to trade blame between Abuja and Ibadan but to unite behind the rescue effort.
The NUT is not moved by promises alone. It says the strike is solidarity in action, and it will hold until teachers and learners are reunited with their families. The union also insists it remains committed to protecting the welfare and security of teachers nationwide.
