Big money moves in Ibadan: Oyo just bumped its 2026 budget past the trillion-naira mark to wrap up major projects before Governor Makinde bows out.
So, here’s the gist, courtesy of cbinews.tv: Oyo State is officially in the trillion-naira club for 2026.
The State Executive Council met on Tuesday and, by Wednesday, Commissioner for Information Prince Dotun Oyelade confirmed they’d signed off on a supplementary budget. That pushes the 2026 appropriation from ₦892.1 billion up to ₦1.102 trillion – an extra ₦210 billion on the table.
Why the top-up? Oyelade says ministries, departments and agencies asked for more cash to actually finish the projects they’ve started, and to hit Governor Seyi Makinde’s development targets before his tenure ends. In short, more money for infrastructure, social welfare, and economic development across the state.
The council didn’t stop at the headline figure, though. They also approved:
- ₦8.77 billion as the first tranche for teaching and learning materials for primary and junior secondary schools. The full education kitty is **₦23.01 billion.
- Those textbooks – covering Numeracy, Literacy, Maths, English and Basic Science – are a joint effort with UBEC and the World Bank. If Oyo gets the procurement and distribution right, the state qualifies for $2 per student, per subject, under the project’s results-based financing.
- $250,000 to back Oyo’s play under the African Continental Free Trade Area, aiming to make the state a go-to spot for trade and investment.
- ₦5.91 billion for the 2026 work plan on health insurance and food security under the Sustainable Action for Economic Recovery programme. Oyelade says it’s meant to keep cushioning the blow from subsidy removal and the current economic squeeze.
On the side, the council had a word for the Nigerian Union of Teachers, urging them to rethink the strike disrupting some schools, and assured residents that security agencies are working on the abduction case in Oriire LGA.
And for the football fans: the council congratulated Governor Makinde as Shooting Stars Sports Club clinched continental competition for the first time in 27 years. They’ve pledged to get Lekan Salami Stadium ready to host the matches.
