Good news for pupils, parents and teachers in Oyo State! Public school teachers will return to the classrooms on Thursday after the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) suspended its strike following fresh security assurances from the state government.
The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Oyo State Wing, has officially suspended its industrial action and directed all public primary and secondary school teachers across the state to resume work on Thursday, 2 July 2026.
The decision comes after renewed discussions with the Oyo State Government and a directive from the union's national leadership, following a review of the security situation after the abduction of teachers and learners in Oriire Local Government Area.
According to a statement jointly signed by the Oyo State Chairman, Hassan Ajibola Fatai, and Secretary, Comrade Olukayode Salami, the union said it considered appeals from the state government and other stakeholders before agreeing to suspend the strike.
The government also assured the union that efforts are being stepped up to secure the safe release of the kidnapped teachers and learners while strengthening security around schools and surrounding communities.
Among the commitments made by the state government are:
Intensified rescue efforts for the abducted victims.
Deployment of a well-equipped Joint Security Task Force to patrol vulnerable schools and access routes.
Continued support for affected families.
Psychosocial care and rehabilitation for rescued victims.
Payment of gratuities and other entitlements to the families of deceased teachers.
Strengthening the Safe School Initiative through improved awareness and early warning systems.
Better emergency response, enhanced community intelligence, upgraded school infrastructure and the use of technology to improve school security.
The union also praised its members, alongside ANCOPSS and AOPSHON, for their unity, discipline and cooperation throughout the strike, describing their support as vital in advancing the welfare and safety of teachers and learners.
While calling on teachers to return to work, the NUT urged members to remain vigilant and promptly report any security concerns in their schools or communities to the appropriate authorities.
The union reaffirmed that it remains committed to protecting the welfare and security of teachers and will continue engaging with the government until all outstanding safety concerns are fully addressed.
