Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has taken a major step towards tightening security coordination across the state by signing a new executive order aimed at regulating vigilante and community security groups.
According to reports by cbinews.tv, Governor Seyi Makinde has signed Executive Order No. 001 of 2026, which focuses on the regulation, registration, and coordination of associations, groups, and organisations offering security and allied services in Oyo State.
The governor signed the order at his private residence in Ibadan, saying the move became necessary due to the rising security challenges facing communities and the increasing number of unregulated vigilante and community-based security groups operating across the state.
Makinde explained that while security remains a shared responsibility between the government and the people, all groups involved in security activities must function within a lawful and accountable framework that guarantees peace, public safety, and order.
He added that the executive order is designed to ensure that all organisations involved in security and allied services are properly registered, documented, and monitored by the state government.
The governor also acknowledged the efforts of citizens and community associations supporting lawful security operations but warned that unchecked and unregulated activities could worsen insecurity and heighten social tension.
Speaking further, Makinde addressed the recent abduction of students and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area, describing the incident as heartbreaking and deeply traumatic for the affected families and communities.
