Heads up, Oyo residents, you’ve got a long weekend coming. Governor Seyi Makinde has just declared Tuesday a public holiday to mark the Islamic New Year.
Right, here’s the gist, as reported by cbinewstv:
Governor Makinde has given the whole of Oyo State the day off tomorrow, Tuesday 16 June 2026, to celebrate Hijrah 1448AH. The memo came from the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Musibau Babatunde, on the governor’s behalf.
He’s also sent warm wishes to Muslims in Oyo and across Nigeria, praying for good health, prosperity, and many more years to witness the new Hijrah calendar.
In his message, Makinde asked the Muslim Ummah to use the occasion for a bit of spiritual reflection – basically, pray for peace, unity and steady progress in Oyo State and Nigeria at large. He said the New Year is a perfect moment to recommit to living peacefully together and actually building the country we all talk about.
Practical bit: he’s urging everyone to stay sharp during the celebrations. If you see anything dodgy, report it straight to security agencies or dial the state’s emergency number, 615.
He rounded it off by reaffirming his administration’s commitment to keeping Oyo safe, and wishing everyone a calm, rewarding Hijrah celebration.
Quick reminder: Hijrah marks Prophet Muhammad’s (SAW) migration from Makkah to Madinah, a huge moment in Islamic history that stands for faith, sacrifice and perseverance.
