Oyo State Gets Tough on Illegal Grazing as Officials Seize Livestock in Iseyin
Farmers in Iseyin can breathe a sigh of relief — Oyo officials have just swooped in on illegal grazing and impounded the culprits.
As reported by cbinews.tv, the Oyo State Rule of Law Enforcement Authority isn’t messing about when it comes to illegal open grazing. They’ve stepped up enforcement and just impounded a batch of livestock caught munching where they shouldn’t be in Apata Olomo, along Ado-Awaye Road in Iseyin Local Government Area.
So, what sparked the crackdown? Local farmers had been kicking up a fuss, saying herders’ animals were trampling their farmlands and helping themselves to crops. For the farmers, that’s not just annoying — it’s their livelihoods taking a direct hit.
Justice Aderonke Aderemi (retd.), the Authority’s Chairperson, explained in a statement on Thursday that the whole thing kicked off after they got petitions from the community. “The enforcement operation was initiated following petitions received from farmers within the community, who alleged that the activities of some herders had led to the destruction of farmlands and the consumption of agricultural produce by livestock, thereby affecting their livelihoods,” she told journalists in Ibadan, according to cbinews.tv.
To get to the bottom of it, a team led by retired Deputy Commissioner of Police Francis Ojoomo, plus Chief of Staff Kofoworola Akinbode and other security personnel, headed out to Iseyin. And yep — they saw it with their own eyes. Livestock were openly grazing, totally against the state’s livestock management rules. That’s when the impoundment happened.
Aderemi made it clear the Authority isn’t backing down. They’re committed to protecting farming communities and making sure everyone plays by the rules when it comes to rearing livestock.
The Bigger Picture
Oyo isn’t alone here. Several states have brought in measures to regulate open grazing to cut down on those recurring farmer-herder clashes, protect agricultural investments, and keep food security solid. The state government has been warning against illegal grazing for a while now and has told agencies to enforce the laws already on the books.
