Worship just got a curfew. With kidnappings on the rise in Oyo State, churches are being told to lock down, light up, and call it a night early.
So here’s what’s happening in Oyo State, according to a report by cbinews.tv. The Christian Association of Nigeria, Oyo chapter, isn’t taking any chances with the recent wave of abductions and kidnappings. They’ve sent out a strong directive to churches across the state: tighten up security, and fast.
The communiqué, signed by CAN Chairman Rev. Elisha Ogundiya and Secretary Very Rev. Samuel Owolabi, basically says it’s time to get serious. First off, churches need to get security personnel and electronic devices strategically positioned around their premises and neighbourhoods. No more leaving things to chance.
Late-night activities? Suspend them. The CAN body is urging churches to wrap up physical gatherings early because of the security situation. They’re also calling for intensified prayers for the release of those already abducted.
Got a church that isn’t fenced or gated? CAN says make it a priority, like, top of the building list. On top of that, they want trained security personnel manning church premises, especially during services. And yes, that means doing a proper security check on your guards and essential staff too.
One more thing, no letting strangers sleep in the sanctuary or on church grounds. The directive is clear on that.
But it’s not just churches. CAN is also asking the public to play it safe. That means limiting travel, avoiding late-night journeys, and sticking to Governor Seyi Makinde’s executive order banning commercial motorcycles after 10:30 p.m.
The association said it’s deeply concerned about the security situation and sympathises with families whose loved ones are being held hostage. They did, however, appreciate efforts by both state and Federal Government to secure the release of abductees, pointing to the Orire Local Government incident.
CAN is now urging the government to move faster to free the abductees and reunite them with their families, while also asking officials to be more careful about what security info gets shared publicly.
As they put it, Oyo CAN will keep working with the government to ensure peace, unity and stability in the state.
