Oyo State is set for a brief change at the top as Governor Seyi Makinde steps away for his annual leave, with his deputy ready to hold the fort.

In a move to ensure smooth governance, the Oyo State House of Assembly has officially approved Governor Seyi Makinde's request to proceed on annual leave.

The approval was given during plenary after the lawmakers considered a formal letter from the governor, in line with the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria which requires a governor to notify the legislature before leaving office.

According to the letter read by the Deputy Speaker, Muhammed Fadeyi, who presided over the sitting in the absence of Speaker Adebo Ogundoyin, Governor Makinde's leave will run from August 10 to September 11, with an official resumption date slated for September 14, 2026.

With the approval granted unanimously, Deputy Governor Bayo Lawal will now step in as Acting Governor to oversee the day-to-day administration of the state and ensure government business continues without interruption.

Lawmakers expressed full confidence in Lawal's capacity to provide effective leadership during this period, noting his track record in the past.

Speaking after the approval, Deputy Speaker Fadeyi wished Governor Makinde a peaceful and refreshing break, while reassuring residents that the legislature remains committed to a cordial working relationship with the executive for the benefit of the people of Oyo State.
