Big political drama brewing in Oyo: APC says it’s sitting out the December 2026 council elections entirely. Why? They reckon Governor Makinde’s got an agenda.
So, it’s official, the APC in Oyo State won’t be on the ballot for the local government elections coming up in December 2026. They dropped the news on Thursday in Ibadan, and they didn’t mince words.
According to a statement from the party’s Publicity Secretary, Wasiu Olawale Sadare, the APC is calling the whole exercise “illegal, ill-conceived, and designed to serve narrow political interests.” Basically, they’re not having it.
Their main beef? Local government autonomy, or the lack of it. Sadare claims Governor Seyi Makinde “does not believe in local government autonomy” and has been calling the shots across all 33 local councils in the state.
“The whole world knows that Governor Makinde does not believe in local government autonomy, and when it comes to democracy at the grassroots, he cannot be trusted,” Sadare said, as reported by cbinewstv.
The APC also alleges the timing is no coincidence. With Makinde set to leave office in May 2027, they believe he’s trying to install loyalists now so he can keep pulling strings from behind the scenes after the 2027 general elections.
“The same Makinde is now trying to impose another set of lackeys who would be loyal to him even after leaving Agodi Government House,” Sadare added. “He knows he cannot achieve this after the conduct of the 2027 general elections, the outcome of which will strip him of all political power and influence.”
The party argues the planned poll won’t actually strengthen grassroots democracy and could make things worse for local councils already facing challenges.
This boycott is definitely going to stir the pot politically. Expect more back-and-forth on local government autonomy, representation, and who really controls council affairs in Oyo.
At the time of filing this report, the Oyo State Government hadn’t responded to the APC’s allegations, according to cbinewstv.
