Imagine waking up to the sound of drones overhead and 2,000 square metres of flames lighting up the skyline. That was Thursday night for parts of Ukraine.
As reported by cbinews.tv, Russia launched a huge wave of drones at Ukraine overnight, with Kyiv and Mykolaiv taking the brunt of it.
The worst of the damage was east of Kyiv in the Boryspil district. A drone strike hit an infrastructure site and kicked off a massive fire - we’re talking around 2,000 square metres up in flames. Emergency crews were out in force, pumping out huge amounts of firefighting foam while thick black smoke billowed above the site. Pictures from cbinews.tv show just how intense the blaze was.
Down south in Mykolaiv, one person was injured. Firefighters there dealt with burning vehicles and, just to be safe, ran radiation checks too. Standard precaution now, but it shows how tense things are.
Ukraine’s Air Force says Russia sent 117 drones overnight. Their defences managed to knock out 102 of them before they hit their targets. Those numbers haven’t been independently verified, according to cbinews.tv.
More than four years into Russia’s full-scale invasion, attacks like this keep hammering Ukraine’s infrastructure. Emergency teams are still on the ground in the affected areas, working out the full scale of the damage.
