It is not every day you hear glowing reviews for security agencies during an election, but this time, the Police actually impressed observers.
Well, here is some refreshing news from the just-concluded Osun State Governorship Election.
The Police Service Commission, PSC, has given the Nigeria Police Force a big thumbs up for how they conducted themselves during the poll held on Saturday, August 15, 2026.
According to a report credited to cbinews.tv, the commendation came in the Commission's interim report released on Sunday, after its teams finished monitoring police conduct across all three senatorial districts - Osun Central, Osun East and Osun West.
And this was not a desk assessment. The PSC said its officers were on the ground across polling units in all 30 local government areas of the state, assessing deployment, professionalism, compliance with election duty guidelines, and how well officers worked with other agencies.
What did they find?
First, deployment was solid. The report noted an average of four police officers per polling unit. Osun Central had an average of three officers per unit, while Osun East and Osun West had five each. The presence was described as adequate and strategic.
It was not just the Police either. Personnel from other agencies were also spotted on duty, including the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, the Department of State Services, the Nigeria Immigration Service, the Federal Road Safety Corps, the Federal Fire Service, the ICPC, the Nigeria Correctional Service, the Nigerian Army, the Nigerian Air Force, the Nigerian Navy, and the Defence Intelligence Agency. The PSC said they complemented the police at polling units and at the Election Joint Operations Control Room, and the collaboration was cordial.
The leader of the PSC monitoring team, DIG Dr Taiwo Lakanu (rtd), said he was satisfied with the overall conduct. He specifically commended the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, for what he called an effective deployment strategy, including appointing DIG Isyaku Mohammed, PhD, as the Election DIG and CP Samuel Erale Etaifo as the Election CP.
According to the Commission, officers across the three districts were generally professional, courteous, approachable and orderly, and responded appropriately to inquiries from the monitoring teams.
In its own words: “Overall, the Nigeria Police Force exhibited a high level of professionalism, orderliness and cordiality during the election.”
The PSC added that it will continue its oversight to ensure officers on electoral duty stick to established professional standards.
