Nigeria may be heading toward a major economic showdown with South African firms as Senator Adams Oshiomhole pushes for drastic action to protect Nigerians facing xenophobic violence abroad.
CBI News reports that Senator Adams Oshiomhole has called on the Federal Government to consider revoking the operating licences of South African-owned companies in Nigeria, including MTN Nigeria and MultiChoice Group, over renewed xenophobic attacks on Nigerians in South Africa.
The call follows growing outrage within Nigeria’s National Assembly over the safety of Nigerian citizens living in South Africa, amid reports of fresh violence targeting foreign nationals.
Speaking during plenary, Oshiomhole stressed the need for a decisive and strategic response, warning that Nigeria must go beyond mere sympathy and take concrete action to defend its citizens.
“We are not here to share tears,” he declared, urging the government to adopt firm economic measures that reflect mutual respect in international relations.
The Edo North lawmaker argued that diplomacy must be reciprocal, stating, “If you hit me, I’ll hit you. It’s an economic struggle.”
Oshiomhole proposed stronger retaliatory steps, including the potential nationalisation of MTN Nigeria and the withdrawal of its operating licence, noting the telecom giant’s significant revenue base within Nigeria.
He added that such measures could serve as both a deterrent and an opportunity to boost indigenous businesses.
The senator also extended his criticism to MultiChoice, operators of DSTV, accusing the company of implementing policies that disadvantage Nigerian consumers and the local economy.
The development signals a possible escalation in economic tensions between Nigeria and South Africa, as lawmakers push for tougher policies to safeguard Nigerian interests at home and abroad.
