Governor Seyi Makinde says the recent school abduction in Oyo State revealed a serious gap in intelligence gathering, urging residents to report suspicious movements before crimes happen.
Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has said the recent school abduction in Orire Local Government exposed a major intelligence gap in the state’s security system, according to cbinews.tv.
Speaking during the inauguration of the newly created Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) of the Nigeria Police Force in Ibadan, Makinde urged residents to stop keeping quiet about suspicious movements and activities around them.
The governor said preliminary findings from the Orire incident showed that important information was either delayed or never passed to security agencies, making it difficult to prevent the tragedy.
“From what we know so far about yesterday’s incident in Orire Local Government, there is still a big gap in giving timely information to security agencies. When you see strange movements or suspicious behaviour, please report it,” Makinde said.
He stressed that security is everyone’s responsibility and warned that government alone cannot keep communities safe without public cooperation.
Makinde also described the launch of the VCRU as a major step in tackling kidnapping and violent crimes in Oyo State and across the South-West. According to him, the tactical unit is the first of its kind in the region and will strengthen the state’s security architecture through rapid response, intelligence-sharing and professionalism.
The governor expressed sympathy to families affected by the abduction, praying for the victims and assuring residents that his administration would continue supporting security agencies with logistics, surveillance infrastructure and operational support.
He also commended the Inspector-General of Police and the Oyo State Police Command for establishing the unit, describing it as a strong partnership between the Federal Government and the state government.
