Political tension is rising in the Democratic Republic of Congo as major opposition parties join forces against alleged plans to amend the constitution and extend President Félix Tshisekedi’s time in office.

According to reports monitored by cbinews.tv, opposition leaders in Kinshasa accused the Tshisekedi administration of attempting to push constitutional changes that could allow the president to remain in power beyond the country’s two-term limit.

During a joint press conference, members of the new opposition coalition described the proposed reforms as a serious threat to democracy ahead of future elections.

Nicolas Lenga, an official of the opposition Envol party, strongly criticised the move, calling it “an act of rebellion against the Republic and a declaration of war on the Congolese people.”

He also urged citizens to defend the constitution, referencing Article 64, which encourages Congolese people to resist any attempt to exercise power outside constitutional provisions.

The controversy follows recent comments by President Tshisekedi suggesting he could seek a third term through a national referendum after his current mandate ends in 2028.

Tshisekedi has also warned that ongoing insecurity in eastern DR Congo, where M23 rebels control parts of North and South Kivu provinces, could delay future elections.
