Worried about safety in schools? Ondo State just made a big move to keep pupils and teachers protected.
So, Ondo State isn’t taking any chances when it comes to school safety. The state government has just set up a steering committee for the Safe Schools Programme, and it’s all about shielding pupils from kidnapping and other criminal threats.
If you haven’t heard of it, the Safe Schools Initiative is actually a Federal Government programme. The whole idea is to protect students, teachers and school buildings from violence, kidnappings and other attacks. Pretty timely, right?
The committee was officially inaugurated in Akure on Tuesday. State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Igbekele Ajibefun, said the group will handle the big stuff — giving strategic direction and making sure everyone’s working together.
Who’s on the team? Quite a mix. You’ve got reps from the Nigerian Army, Nigeria Police Force, NSCDC, Amotekun Corps, plus religious and traditional leaders, and the Parents-Teachers Association. Basically, all the key players are at the table.
Ajibefun, who’s chairing the committee, didn’t mince words. He told members: “You are to support the implementation of the Safe Schools Programme and strengthen mechanisms to prevent security threats in the educational institutions of the state.” He stressed that success depends on everyone playing their part — because security is a shared responsibility that needs vigilance and collective action.
Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Akindele Ige, who’s also the committee secretary, explained why this matters now. Recent attacks on schools have made it clear — we need deliberate, coordinated action to protect students, educators and school infrastructure.
As Ige put it, “No meaningful teaching can take place where there is fear, and no effective learning can occur where there is insecurity.” And honestly, he’s got a point.
