If you love a proper David vs Goliath football story with Olympic dreams on the line, this is it. Nine-time African queens against island underdogs, but with a twist — both legs are being played on Nigerian soil. And right now, it's all Nigeria.
As reported by cbinews.tv, the Super Falcons of Nigeria are currently in action against Comoros in what is a crucial qualifier for the women’s football event of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.
> LIVE UPDATES - First Leg
> 5' – Nigeria all over them! Falcons dominating the early exchanges, camping in Comoros’ half.
> 10' – Ten minutes gone, still goalless. Dominance is there, but that final touch is missing.
Let’s put this in context. The Super Falcons are Africa’s most successful women’s team – 10 WAFCON titles and counting.
But the Olympics? That’s been a rollercoaster. Nigeria first appeared at Sydney 2000, then reached the quarter-finals at Athens 2004 – still the best finish ever by an African team at the Olympics.
Then came the heartbreak. We missed three straight Games – London 2012, Rio 2016, Tokyo 2020. The drought only ended last year when we edged South Africa 1-0 on aggregate to qualify for Paris 2024, our first Olympics in 16 years since Beijing 2008.
Now the goal is back-to-back qualifications for the first time since 2004 and 2008. This Comoros tie is just step one of a five-fixture qualifying marathon that runs till December 2027.
This isn’t just about tactics on a whiteboard. For players like Ajibade and Nnadozie, who fought so hard to return Nigeria to the world stage in Paris, this is personal.
And for Comoros? Imagine being that team. You travel thousands of miles from your Indian Ocean islands to play your ‘home’ game in your opponent’s backyard because you don’t have an approved pitch. Yet you’re still here, dreaming of LA. That’s the spirit of the Olympics right there.
There’s also the young Edo Queens goalkeeper Christiana Uzoma and Portsmouth’s Comfort Erhabor getting a sniff at the big time – for many of these home-based stars, this is their audition.
Why It Matters?
Beyond pride, this matters for funding, rankings, and the future of women’s football in Nigeria. Olympic qualification guarantees global exposure, better sponsorships, and inspires the next Asisat Oshoala watching in her living room in Ikenne or Lagos.
For Africa, every qualifier win chips away at the notion that we’re just participants. The Falcons proved in Paris they can compete.
What Happens Next?
It’s pretty straightforward:
Step 1: Beat Comoros over two legs here in Ikenne.
Step 2: Face Morocco in the third round. That tie was confirmed after the Republic of the Congo withdrew from the series. Morocco are no pushovers – they are WAFCON finalists.
Step 3: The third round is slated for 23rd Feb – 6th March 2027. If we pass Morocco, we’d then likely face one of Tunisia, Senegal, Benin or Mali in the final rounds.
In short, win tonight and Monday, and we set up a mouth-watering North African showdown.
