A dropped phone and an ATM card gave them away. Ogun police say they have smashed part of a car theft ring operating in Abeokuta.
The Ogun State Police Command has arrested three suspected members of a vehicle theft and armed robbery syndicate after separate intelligence led operations in Abeokuta and nearby areas, cbinews.tv reports.
The suspects have been named as Ismaila Israel Sokunbi, 38, Kayode Adeyemi, 37, and Kola Taiwo, 55. Police say they are linked to armed robbery and car theft cases, and a stolen Toyota Corolla has already been recovered.
DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, the state Police Public Relations Officer, shared the details in a statement to journalists on Saturday.
According to him, it all started on 22 May 2026. Operatives from Obantoko Division responded to a distress call after an attempted armed robbery at Oniyo Community in Arokoje, Obantoko, Abeokuta.
Armed men had tried to snatch a resident’s vehicle while he was opening his gate. The victim raised an alarm and neighbours rushed to the scene. In the struggle, the suspects lost control of the car and crashed into a fence. As police closed in, they abandoned the vehicle and fled in a standby car.
But they left something behind. One suspect dropped an Infinix mobile phone and a Wema Bank ATM card. Police picked those up as exhibits.
Detectives from the Anti Robbery Squad ran telecommunications analysis on the items. That led them to Sokunbi, who they believe is a key suspect linked to Adeyemi, described as the syndicate’s kingpin.
Sokunbi was arrested on 26 May in the Oke Jigbo and Isale Abese areas of Abeokuta. A search of his house turned up quite a haul: a ceiling fan, gas cooker, SIM cards, suspected charms, mechanical tools, a commercial gas filling hose and cooking pots.
Babaseyi said further investigation by the State Criminal Investigation Department at Eleweran led them to Ibadan, Oyo State, where they arrested Adeyemi.
Both men allegedly confessed to the attempted robbery and admitted they belong to a syndicate behind multiple vehicle thefts in Abeokuta and surrounding communities.
In a related case, Anti Robbery Squad operatives also arrested Taiwo. He is connected to the theft of a Toyota Corolla that was reported stolen at Osiele on 18 May.
Taiwo also allegedly confessed to stealing a green Toyota Camry in an earlier operation.
Police say efforts are ongoing to recover more stolen vehicles and arrest other members of the group.
The suspects are still in police custody and will be charged to court once investigations are concluded.
Commissioner of Police Bode Ojajuni praised the operatives for their professionalism and intelligence led approach. He said the command remains committed to tackling violent crime and vehicle theft across the state. He also urged residents to report any suspicious activities to security agencies.
