Odegbami Backs Super Eagles to Qualify for 2026 World Cup

Odegbami expressed confidence that the Super Eagles can qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after their win over Benin Republic.

Nigerian football legend, Segun Odegbami, has expressed confidence that the Super Eagles have what it takes to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup following their emphatic 4–0 victory over Benin Republic in Uyo on Tuesday night.

CBI News reports that the former Green Eagles captain hailed the team’s performance, describing it as a display of both skill and determination.

“We did very well. I am happy with the boys, and I think we deserved to win and we won very well. We now have an opportunity to qualify,” Odegbami said after the match.

“I think we have a very good chance to qualify from these play-offs to make it to the World Cup.”

The convincing win fueled by Victor Osimhen’s hat-trick and a stoppage-time goal from Frank Onyeka sealed Nigeria’s spot in the African play-offs.

The Super Eagles finished the group stage with 15 points and a +7 goal difference, ranking among the best four second-placed teams.

The result provided a major boost after a shaky qualifying campaign that had left fans anxious about missing consecutive World Cups for the first time since 1994.

CBI News reports that Odegbami, who captained Nigeria to its first Africa Cup of Nations title in 1980 and represented the country at the 1976 Olympics, said the current squad possesses the talent and mentality to go all the way.

“With the players we have, I believe we can make it. They just need to keep their focus and play with the same hunger,” he added.

The Super Eagles are now set to face Gabon another second-placed team in the CAF play-offs that will determine qualification for the six-team FIFA intercontinental play-offs, from which two teams will advance to the expanded 48-team World Cup.
