Peter Obi slams Government over worsening power outages
Labour Party's 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi has accused President Bola Tinubu’s administration of failing to keep its campaign promise of delivering constant electricity within four years.
He warned that persistent blackouts threaten jobs, businesses and economic growth.
Tinubu pledged in December 2022 that Nigerians should not re-elect him if he failed to improve power supply.
Obi said the government has instead presided over repeated grid collapses and worsening outages despite billions of dollars invested in the sector.
“Nigeria has spent more on power generation with little or no increase in supply than countries like Vietnam, Egypt, Indonesia and Bangladesh, which have doubled their generation capacity,” Obi said in a post on X.
He urged the government to shift focus from costly road projects to power generation and distribution, arguing that raising supply from about 5,000 megawatts to 10,000MW could boost gross domestic product by 50%, spur industrial growth and create millions of jobs.
On Wednesday, Sept. 10, Nigeria’s national power grid collapsed after a generation unit tripped, triggering cascading failures across the system, according to the Independent System Operator (NISO).
The outage, which began at about 10:20 GMT (11.20 AM) local time, caused a sharp drop in load nationwide. Restoration efforts began shortly after, with power first restored in Abuja via the Shiroro hydropower plant, and “substantial restoration” achieved later in the day.
