The attack took place as LP's Edo Governorship candidate Olumide Akpata declared for the ADC..
Former presidential candidate Peter Obi and former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress John Odigie-Oyegun were allegedly attacked by suspected thugs in Edo State on Tuesday, a spokesman said.
Yunusa Tanko, former campaign spokesman for Obi and National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement Worldwide, said in a statement issued in Abuja that the incident occurred in Benin City during an event involving the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
“Peter Obi and the leadership of the ADC are under siege and attack in Benin, Edo State. At the formal declaration of Olumide Akpata into the African Democratic Congress, armed individuals followed us from the ADC Secretariat to the residence of Chief John Odigie-Oyegun,” the statement said.
Tanko said the attackers shot at the gate of the residence and damaged several vehicles, describing the incident as an apparent assassination attempt.
He added that the development underscored growing concerns over political tensions and the safety of opposition figures.
The reported attack comes amid heightened political activity in Edo State, with opposition leaders challenging recent electoral outcomes and raising concerns about the state of Nigeria’s democracy.
There was no immediate comment from the police.
