Travelling for NYSC camp? The scheme’s DG is urging parents to give prospective corps members extra transport money to help them avoid risky night journeys and stay safe on the road.
According to cbinews.tv, the Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Olakunle Nafiu, has advised parents and guardians to provide extra travel funds for prospective corps members heading to orientation camps across Nigeria.
Speaking during a forum organised by the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja on Wednesday, Nafiu stressed that safety should come first during mobilisation.
He explained that many corps members spend all their transport fare on one straight trip and refuse to stop over, even when journeys become unsafe at night.
“It is better for parents and guardians to provide extra transport money for their children to break journeys safely than expose themselves to danger,” he said.
The NYSC boss warned that travelling late at night exposes corps members to serious security risks, including kidnapping and other dangers on Nigerian roads.
He also advised prospective corps members to begin travel plans immediately after receiving their call-up numbers instead of rushing at the last minute.
“We tell them not to travel after 6 pm. Once it is getting late, they should break their journey and continue the next day,” Nafiu added.
According to him, the NYSC has strengthened collaboration with security agencies such as the police and military to improve safety for corps members travelling to camps nationwide. He said escorts, patrol teams and surveillance have been increased along major routes.
Nafiu also warned prospective corps members against paying anyone who claims they can influence postings, insisting that deployment is done automatically through the NYSC system.
He clarified that only legally married women and corps members with verified medical conditions are eligible for special considerations in postings closer to their families or healthcare facilities.
