Gutted by relegation? West Ham aren’t messing about – Nuno’s staying to fight for an instant Premier League return.
Right, so here’s the latest from cbinews.tv – West Ham fans, take a deep breath. Nuno Espirito Santo isn’t going anywhere.
Despite the Hammers dropping down to the Championship for the first time since 2012, the Portuguese boss sat down with senior management on Monday, and they’ve decided to stick together. Either side could’ve walked away without paying a penny in compensation, but nope – they’re doubling down. The plan? Pull off another 2018-style promotion, just like Nuno did with Wolves.
In an open letter to supporters, the club said: “We are pleased to confirm he has expressed his continued commitment to the club – as we have to him.”
And Nuno’s apparently buzzing for it. The club added: “Nuno made it very clear that he is highly motivated for the challenge of guiding West Ham United back to the topflight at the first time of asking. That must be the unquestionable goal for next season.
Let’s not forget – his only other Championship season was mental. 99 points, title winners with Wolves. Not bad on the CV.
But let’s be real – it’s been a rough season
West Ham’s statement didn’t sugarcoat it: “We cannot shy away from the fact our season has not been good enough.” Relegation is set to sting to the tune of £200m in lost revenue. With losses already topping £100m in the last accounts, the writings on the wall – big-name sales are coming. Jarrod Bowen and Mateus Fernandes are the crown jewels, and clubs will be sniffing around.
Still, the board reckons they’ve seen enough to back Nuno. After Graham Potter got the boot in September, things started slowly. But since January? 25 points from 17 games – that’s 1.47 per match. Stretch that over a full season and you’re looking at 7th place. They’re putting that down to better mentality and togetherness, and they “want Nuno to continue developing that progress.”
The club knows the London Stadium move still rubs fans the wrong way. It’s massive – 62,500 seats, double most Championship grounds – but plenty call it soulless. And those promises about competing at the top and in Europe? Haven’t exactly landed.
With David Gold passing away in January 2023 and Karren Brady stepping down last month amid ongoing supporter abuse, chairman David Sullivan’s the last of the old guard left.
The board said relegation “hurts deeply” and they’ll be reviewing “every aspect of the club’s operation” to make sure West Ham come back stronger by August 2027 – on and off the pitch.
First step: actually listening. They’re promising “real, significant actions” – starting with season ticket cuts of up to 30% next season.
So, one season job then? If Nuno can work the same magic he did at Wolves with Ruben Neves and a loan-star Diogo Jota, the Hammers might just bounce straight back. Question is – will he get the same calibre to work with this time?
