Confused about who was actually on that Warri-Itakpe train? The NRC has just set the record straight — and two big names from Delta weren’t even on board.
So, here’s the latest on that Warri-Itakpe train accident near Agbor. You might’ve seen reports claiming Senator Ede Dafinone, who represents Delta Central, and former Delta SSG Patrick Ukah were passengers when it happened. Turns out, they weren’t.
The Nigerian Railway Corporation cleared things up on Wednesday in a statement signed by its MD, Kayode Opeifa. According to the NRC, an earlier update mistakenly listed the two as being on the train. Actually, they were on the ground helping out.
Both men jumped in to mobilise first responders and emergency crews right after the crash. The NRC has since apologised for the mix-up, saying it regrets any embarrassment caused and really appreciates their quick, selfless support during the rescue.
For context, the Federal Government confirmed four people died and 24 were injured in the accident. The train had 442 booked passengers, plus 40 crew, security and service staff — 482 people in total, according to a statement from the Federal Ministry of Transportation signed by Permanent Secretary Funsho Adebiyi.
Rescue operations kicked off immediately with help from the Delta State Government, NEMA, FRSC, Police, Civil Defence, local authorities and other emergency teams. By 6:30 p.m., everyone had been evacuated, and the injured were taken to medical facilities in Agbor.
Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has sent condolences to the victims’ families and told state officials to keep supporting rescue efforts. He called the crash tragic and promised the state government will continue helping survivors who are still receiving treatment.
