Hundreds in red and black have taken to the streets of Accra, and the opposition says Ghana's democracy is on the line.

It was a sea of red and black in Accra as Ghana’s main opposition party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), staged a major protest with a very blunt message: “Democracy Under Attack.”

According to cbinews.tv, hundreds of NPP supporters, MPs and party leaders marched through the capital to present petitions to three key institutions, the Supreme Court, Parliament, and the Presidency.

The timing was symbolic. The demonstration came exactly a year after the tragic helicopter crash that killed eight people, including government officials.

So what sparked this latest protest? The NPP is pointing to a string of developments it says are troubling. That includes recent court decisions, the arrest of some opposition members, and the removal of former Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

The party also took aim at the acquittal of former MASLOC CEO Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu. You’ll recall the Court of Appeal overturned her 10-year sentence after ruling prosecutors failed to prove their case, but the NPP argues the decision points to unequal treatment in the justice system.

More broadly, the opposition is accusing the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) government of using security agencies to intimidate its members and clamp down on free speech, particularly through the prosecution of social media users over false or offensive content.

The government, however, isn’t having any of it. Officials have rejected the allegations outright, insisting they remain fully committed to the rule of law and that security agencies are simply enforcing the law to protect public order.

This isn’t the first time the NPP has hit the streets either. The party has organised similar demonstrations in the past over the former Chief Justice’s removal and the arrest of one of its regional leaders.
