Big money is coming to Nigerian football. Like, really big. The NPFL just announced a ₦1bn prize for next season’s winners, and that’s just the start of the changes.
Massive news for Nigerian football dropped this week, and it’s got a billion naira attached to it.
According to cbinewstv, the winners of the 2026/27 Nigeria Professional Football League season will bag a whopping ₦1bn. That’s the biggest prize money we’ve ever seen in Nigerian domestic football, full stop.
Shehu Dikko, chairman of the National Sports Commission, made the announcement on Tuesday after a big strategy session between the NSC and NFF in Abuja. And he didn’t stop at the champions.
Here’s how the new prize pot breaks down:
Winners: ₦1bn minimum
Runners-up: ₦500m
Third place: ₦300m
All of that is still subject to official confirmation from the league, but Dikko said it’s part of a plan to boost the NPFL’s commercial value and make the league more competitive and professional.
“I want to thank NFF President Ibrahim Gusau and General Secretary Dr Mohammed Sanusi for a very productive engagement,” Dikko told reporters. “We all share the same vision of moving Nigerian football forward at every level.”
But the cash wasn’t the only thing on the table. They also talked Super Eagles. Head coach Eric Chelle has agreed to a new contract with improved pay, and there’ll be performance-based perks for his assistants too. The NFF is sorting the paperwork now.
Dikko said Chelle was happy with the talks, and they’re hoping it creates the right environment for success.
And they’re already thinking way ahead. Like, 2030 World Cup ahead.
To keep talent flowing into the senior team, Chelle will also take charge of the U-23s — the Dream Team. The idea is to build a smooth pipeline from youth to Super Eagles, with extra technical staff stepping in when fixtures clash.
“Our objective is to build now for 2030,” Dikko said. “We want Nigeria to perform strongly at AFCON 2027 and qualify successfully for future competitions.”
The Super Falcons weren’t left out either. The NSC and NFF reviewed plans for the upcoming Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, agreeing to boost funding and player welfare. The team will camp in Nigeria first, then head to Morocco for friendlies before WAFCON kicks off.
