North Korea and Russia are getting cosier than ever, and Kim Jong Un could be heading to the Kremlin very soon.

Right, let’s break this down.

As reported by cbinews.tv, North Korea has reaffirmed its unwavering support for Russia’s war in Ukraine after its Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui met with Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov in Moscow on Tuesday.

According to Pyongyang’s state media, the two sides have “reaffirmed their steadfast political will to accelerate the long-term multi-faceted development of the bilateral relations”. That’s diplomatic speak for: we’re sticking together.

KCNA, the North’s state news agency, quoted the DPRK side as expressing “invariable support for all the internal and external policies of the Russian Federation to eliminate the root cause of the Ukrainian dispute and defend its national sovereignty, territorial integrity and international justice.” Russia, for its part, said it fully backs North Korea’s own efforts to defend its sovereignty and security.

It’s no secret the two isolated nations have grown incredibly close since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in early 2022. As cbinews.tv notes, Pyongyang has reportedly sent troops to Russia’s Kursk region and supplied weapons systems, and in return, analysts say it’s getting much-needed financial aid, food, energy and military technology.

Even Vladimir Putin weighed in, saying in a video released by the Kremlin on Sunday: “I would like once again to express my gratitude for the support provided to the special military operation we are conducting.”

During her visit, Choe also laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers by the Kremlin wall, KCNA confirmed on Tuesday.

Now, the big question: is Kim Jong Un next?

The North Korean leader last travelled to Russia in September 2023, while Putin made a rare visit to Pyongyang in June 2024. South Korean media reports suggest Choe’s trip could be about setting up another summit.

“Putin has repeatedly invited Kim to visit Russia since his trip to Pyongyang in 2024,” Park Won-gon, a professor of North Korean studies at Ewha Womans University, told AFP.

And let’s not forget China. President Xi Jinping made a rare trip to Pyongyang last month, where he and Kim vowed to bolster ties. China still accounts for nearly 98 per cent of North Korea’s foreign trade, but as Park put it: “After hosting Chinese President Xi Jinping this year, Kim would have a strong incentive to visit Russia as well.”

“It would showcase North Korea breaking out of diplomatic isolation while highlighting support from both China and Russia, reinforcing the image of a North Korea-China-Russia alignment.”
