Felt your building shake in Abuja on Tuesday? You weren't imagining it — but there's no need to panic.

So, here's what happened.

On Tuesday, August 4th, several buildings across Abuja experienced a bit of a wobble after a light earth tremor. According to cbinews.tv, the shake was picked up by the NGSA Seismic Monitoring Station in Utako at exactly 11:23:27 am.

The details? The agency says it came from just 1-kilometre deep and spread about four kilometres in just five seconds. Quick, sharp, and definitely enough to make you pause.

Naturally, people were worried, but the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, has called for calm.

In a statement on Wednesday by his Special Assistant on Media, Lara Owoeye-Wise, Alake urged FCT residents to go about their normal business without any anxiety.

The Minister, who is currently in Washington DC speaking to American investors about joint ventures in the solid minerals sector, said other proactive measures have already been deployed to keep residents and properties safe. He has also directed the Nigerian Geological Survey Agency (NGSA) to send him hourly updates on the seismic situation around Abuja for review and possible escalation.

And what did the NGSA actually say about the tremor? They've classed it as a “light event of I to II magnitude on the Mercalli scale.”

In their words: “This is a characteristic feature of a surface earth tremor that poses no threat to lives and properties except for the discomfort of the shake and fear of possible destruction.”

So, in short — uncomfortable, yes. Dangerous, no. The agency will keep monitoring while you get on with your day.
