The Lagos State Government has clarified that there is no restriction on movement during the monthly environmental sanitation exercise, contrary to claims in some quarters.

cbinews.tv reports that the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, made the clarification in a post on X while responding to a resident who alleged that someone had been arrested at the Ikeja Police Station during the sanitation exercise.

The X user, identified as Faveo Autos, had asked the commissioner what the penalty was for moving around during the exercise, while alleging that an arrest had been made.

Responding, Wahab said any arrest based solely on movement during the sanitation exercise is unlawful and does not reflect the policy of the Lagos State Government.

According to the commissioner, the environmental sanitation exercise was reintroduced to promote a cleaner and healthier environment across the state, not to restrict residents' movement.

He explained that although the initiative is backed by the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law, 2017, the law does not provide for any restriction on movement during the exercise.

Wahab added that the government's priority is to encourage Lagosians to see environmental sanitation as a civic responsibility rather than something driven by arrests or enforcement.

He urged residents to actively participate in keeping their surroundings clean, describing environmental cleanliness as a shared responsibility that will help create a healthier and more sustainable Lagos for everyone.
