Ondo Governor says no terrorist incident has occurred in the state since 2022 massacre...
The Governor of Ondo State, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has dismissed claims that terrorists have carried out attacks in the state, insisting that no such incident has occurred since the 2022 massacre at a Catholic church in Owo.
Speaking during a live media chat, the governor said the state had not recorded any terrorist activity since the attack on Saint Francis Xavier Catholic Church in June 2022.
“Terrorist operation has not happened after the Owo massacre. We’ve not experienced any terrorist attack. I said that we have isolated cases of kidnapping for ransom; it’s happening, but we have to engage,” Aiyedatiwa said.
He explained that while some kidnapping incidents had been reported in parts of the state, security agencies were actively responding to the situation to ensure victims are rescued and those responsible are brought to justice.
“The security agencies have to engage to be able to ensure that those who are kidnapped are released, the victims are released, and then they put a trail on those who are perpetrating that act,” he added.
Responding to questions about recent killings by suspected bandits in some communities, including Agamo, the governor maintained that the incidents should not be described as bandit attacks.
According to him, the cases were isolated and different from the typical operations of bandits or terrorists, who often attack communities indiscriminately.
“Those cases you mentioned, as I said, are isolated cases. These are not bandit attacks as it were, because when a bandit comes in, they destroy, they kill for no cause,” he said.
“They don’t take ransom. They don’t do anything. They just come in and just displace people".
CBI News reports that Aiyedatiwa further cited the Owo church attack as an example of how terrorist operations are usually carried out, noting that the perpetrators in that incident unleashed violence without attempting to steal from victims.
He said: “Like what happened at Saint Francis Catholic Church in Owo. They didn’t take, not even the handset or phone of anyone. They just came in and blasted the whole place with a grenade and all that and left.”
