Panic? No fire. Just a puff of smoke and quick thinking at MMIA. Here’s what really happened at Lagos Airport on Sunday; let’s clear the air — literally.

There was a bit of drama at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos on Sunday that had people thinking Terminal 2 was on fire. Emergency teams were seen moving, and yes, social media did what it does best. But according to cbinews.tv, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, has now come out to set the record straight.

No fire. FAAN said in an updated statement on Sunday that what people saw was smoke from the terminal’s FM-200 fire suppression system discharging. Think of it like the airport’s own sprinkler system, but for fire, not water. It went off, made some smoke, and that was it.“Preliminary findings indicate that there was no fire at the terminal. The smoke observed within the affected area resulted from the discharge of the terminal’s FM-200 fire suppression system. The reason for the activation of the fire suppression system is currently being investigated,” FAAN explained.

To be fair to FAAN, they didn’t take chances. They activated emergency protocols immediately and deployed their Aerodrome Rescue and Firefighting Service (ARFFS to Terminal 2 as a precaution. Better safe than sorry, especially at our busiest airport.

The good news? No casualties, no injuries. Everyone is fine, and operations continued. Investigations are still ongoing to find out exactly what triggered the system in the first place.
