Worried about paying more for electricity? You can breathe easy for now, the Federal Government says there will be no increase in your electricity tariff.

Good news for electricity consumers across Nigeria. The Federal Government has confirmed that it has no plans to increase electricity tariffs anytime soon.

Speaking at a media roundtable on resetting Nigeria’s power sector in Lagos on Friday, the Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, cleared the air on the rumours making the rounds.

According to a report by cbinews.tv, the Minister was quite direct about the government’s position. He said the current administration is not looking at a tariff hike, but is instead focused on fixing the real issues Nigerians care about, better service, more meters, and fair billing.

In his words: “First, there is no policy by this administration to increase electricity tariffs beyond its current level. Our priority is not tariff increase in the immediate term. Our priority is service improvement, universal metering and ensuring Nigerians pay only for the electricity they actually consume.”

He also assured that the government will keep looking at ways to protect vulnerable consumers while still making sure the electricity market remains financially stable.

This stance, as reported by cbinews.tv, is part of a bigger plan to completely reset the power sector. The reforms include implementing the Electricity Act, which allows states to create their own electricity markets, and pushing forward with a Power Sector Bond to clear old debts owed to power generation companies and gas suppliers.

And for those tired of estimated billing, there is more. The Minister said the Presidential Metering Initiative is at the heart of the reforms. As part of this, the government has launched the Power Force initiative, which will engage 5,000 young Nigerians in meter installation across the country, with technical training from the National Power Training Institute of Nigeria.

On generation, Tegbe revealed that Nigeria has consistently generated 5,000 megawatts in the last two weeks, thanks to better coordination and improved plant availability. He noted, however, that generation alone won’t fix the sector, transmission, distribution and market payments all need to improve together.

Other major plans in the pipeline include a full technical audit of the national transmission network, better coordination between federal and state regulators, strategic investments in the Lagos, Enugu-Port Harcourt and Abuja-Kaduna-Kano transmission corridors, and a new ‘Super Grid Programme’ to strengthen the national grid.

The Minister expressed confidence that Nigerians will start seeing visible improvements in power supply in the coming months, with a stronger grid, reduced losses and wider access expected in the next two to three years.
