If teachers are too scared to enter the classroom, who exactly is left to teach our children?
Here's what's happening, and it's getting serious.
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) says it's ready to down tools in solidarity with teachers if the government doesn't urgently get a grip on insecurity. This is after a wave of abductions targeting pupils, students and education workers from Zamfara to Oyo, and Maiduguri to Port Harcourt.
NLC President, Joe Ajaero, backed the ongoing strike by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) in a statement on Wednesday, calling Nigeria a "horror scene" right now.
His words were blunt: "The national and well-coordinated action represents the resolve of teachers to take their destiny into their own hands instead of waiting to be slaughtered."
Ajaero praised the NUT leadership for what he called a courageous decision to withdraw services nationwide, and said the action isn't just about teachers, it's about everyone on the frontline. Health workers, local government staff, pupils, they're all increasingly in the firing line.
He singled out the graphic reports from Oyo State as "deeply distressing" and warned that labour won't just watch.
"We will not hesitate to embark on a solidarity action with the teachers or any other group of workers if government does not take issues of collective security more seriously," he said.
The NLC says it has tried the polite route, organising summits, holding protests, engaging government, but things are only getting worse despite all the assurances from Abuja.
Now the message is simple: stop the press statements, prioritise rescue operations, and put measurable security in place around schools. Otherwise, expect a full-blown labour mobilisation.
