Nigerian labour union tells leaders to embrace sacrifice at Easter...
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) on Saturday urged political leaders to adopt sacrificial governance in line with the spirit of Easter, calling for policies that prioritise citizens’ welfare.
NLC President Joe Ajaero, in an Easter message issued in Abuja, said the season symbolised sacrifice, love and redemption, reflecting the selfless service of Jesus Christ.
“The sacrifice of Christ was for the redemption of mankind, not personal benefit. Leaders must therefore see governance as a platform for service, not accumulation of wealth,” Ajaero said.
He said Nigerian workers were facing mounting challenges, including rising transportation costs, poor electricity supply and insecurity, which have strained incomes and worsened living conditions.
Ajaero added that persistent power shortages had crippled businesses, while what he described as the suppression of workers’ rights and harsh economic policies undermined democratic principles.
He called on governments at all levels to implement people-oriented policies to address poverty, unemployment and infrastructure deficits.
“We urge leaders to prioritise the welfare of citizens, ensure security of lives and property, and create an enabling environment for economic growth,” he said.
Ajaero expressed optimism that workers would overcome current challenges through unity and collective action, reaffirming the NLC’s commitment to advocating social justice and equitable distribution of resources.
He wished Nigerians a peaceful Easter celebration and urged continued commitment to justice and national development.
