Imagine your house finally getting its own unique digital ID. No more “it’s the blue gate after the big mango tree” for deliveries. NIPOST is making it happen.
So, here’s the gist, as reported by cbinews.tv: The Nigerian Postal Service, NIPOST, is going all-in on a National Digital Postcode System that gives every single building in Nigeria its own unique digital address.
At the Post Code Delineation Model Validation 2026 unveiling in Abuja on Monday night, Postmaster General Tola Odeyemi said this isn’t just about mail. It’s a machine-readable address framework that puts a standard location tag on every addressable building in the country.
“Postcode is basically a framework used to have a machine-readable standard location address for every addressable building in Nigeria,” Odeyemi explained.
The big deal? Nigeria would be one of the first African countries to take postcodes down to unit level. Every standing building gets its own code. That could seriously level up deliveries, logistics, emergency response, and even how government plans stuff.
But Odeyemi was quick to point out that Nigeria isn’t a one-size-fits-all kind of place. Mapping Jigawa won’t work the same as mapping Bayelsa.
“Nigeria is a large country. We have all the way from the top of Nigeria, which is almost like the Sahel, to the Savannah, to the Middle Belt, to the tropical South and even to the riverine areas. The logic that will work for Jigawa is not the same logic that will work for Bayelsa because they have completely different geographical expressions, density of buildings, population distribution, and topography,” she said, per cbinews.tv.
NIPOST’s also making sure these new postcodes respect boundaries. No code will cross over two local government areas. And right now, they’re validating the whole thing by comparing aerial maps with what’s actually on ground. Because Mushin in Lagos and Maitama in Abuja? Totally different building density.
“To test the polygons we have drawn aerially, we must ensure they accurately reflect realities on the ground,” Odeyemi added. “We are making sure that density maps and topographical features are properly captured for each state in Nigeria.”
Let’s be real: Nigeria’s addressing system has been a headache for years. If you’ve ever had to direct a dispatch rider or ambulance, you know the struggle. NIPOST’s digital postcode push is aiming to fix that with a tech-driven, standardised system where every building gets its own code.
