Think communication is just for journalists? Think again. At NIJ’s Career 5 Day in Lagos, top industry voices made one thing clear. Whether you are in tech, finance or media, your ability to connect is your real superpower.
Communication took centre stage as the Nigeria Institute of Journalism (NIJ) hosted its 2026 Career 5 Day programme in Lagos. The five-day event drove home one message: no matter your industry, how you speak, write and connect can make or break your career.
Themed “The Power of Communication in Every Industry,” the programme gathered NIJ students alongside media professionals and business leaders to dig into why communication skills are still non-negotiable in today’s workplace, cbinews.tv reports.
Kicking things off, Ayodeji Razaq, media entrepreneur and Chief Executive Officer of RED Media Africa, told students that communication is not just about talking. It is about influence, leadership and solving real problems. In his words, your ability to get your point across is often what sets you apart, whatever field you choose.
He was not alone on the stage. The speaker line up also featured Adedolapo Wale Kehinde, Joel Ozue, and Romoke Badejo, who represented CBI News. Each of them shared personal stories from their careers, pointing out how strong communication builds relationships, sparks innovation and opens doors.
Delivering her presentation, Romoke Badejo reminded the audience that communication is a fundamental human trait. One that cuts across every sector. She encouraged students to sharpen their interpersonal, verbal and digital communication skills if they want to stay relevant in an increasingly connected world.
Beyond the keynote talks, the event was packed with interactive sessions, mentorship corners and honest discussions about what the modern workplace actually demands. Students did not just listen. They engaged.
Many who attended said the biggest takeaway was realising how communication shapes both personal growth and professional opportunities. They left excited to put what they had learnt into practice and keen to explore how communication can fuel career advancement across different industries.
Some of the students who attended the programme spoke about the valuable lessons they gained from the speakers, particularly on the importance of effective communication in personal and professional development.
They expressed excitement about applying the knowledge acquired and learning more about communication as a tool for career advancement and success across different industries.
They described the engagement as insightful, inspiring, and impactful, noting that it broadened their understanding of the opportunities that strong communication skills can create.
Lecturers from the Institute also weighed in, highlighting how Career Day bridges the gap between classroom theory and industry reality. They said it enriches students’ media experience and equips them with the practical skills needed to thrive in the profession.
The event wrapped up with Awards of Honour presented to CBI News and the guest speakers. CBI News received additional recognition for its exceptional industry leadership, its commitment to nurturing future professionals, and its remarkable contributions to the advancement of broadcast media in Africa.
