Tired of waiting on Abuja? Nigeria’s governors say the real fix for insecurity starts at state level — and they’re backing state police, solar power and food security to get there.
So, Nigeria’s governors are sticking to their guns on some big national reforms, and state police is right at the top of the list.
According to cbinews.tv, the Nigeria Governors’ Forum came out of its second 2026 meeting in Abuja on Thursday with a clear message: we need state police, a National Solar Super-Grid, and stronger agricultural programmes if we’re serious about tackling insecurity and improving daily life for Nigerians.
Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, read out the communiqué signed by NGF Chairman AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq. The governors aren’t mincing words — they say insecurity from Boko Haram, banditry and other criminal groups has dragged on for over 20 years, killing thousands and displacing even more. And it’s no longer just a northern problem; parts of the South are feeling it too.
Here’s what they covered, per cbinews.tv:
On State Police:
The Forum got a briefing from the NGF Secretariat and a delegation of State Attorneys-General about setting up state police. They’ve been reviewing constitutional amendments and frameworks to make sure it’s done properly.
The big point? Any state police system has to be “constitutionally sound” and respect federalism and citizens’ rights. No shortcuts. The governors say ongoing consultations will help states present a united front.
On Nutrition & Child Welfare:
They also heard from the Federal Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning about the National Nutrition 774 Initiative and the National Nutrition Bill. The takeaway: governors are committing to cut child malnutrition through better policy coordination.
On Agriculture & World Bank Projects:
The World Bank Country Office briefed them on the Country Partnership Framework for Nigeria 2026–2032 and the Nigeria Sustainable Agricultural Value-Chains for Growth Programme. It’s a results-based plan to boost farm productivity, strengthen value chains, pull in private sector cash, and improve food security and early childhood development.
Governors backed more collaboration with the FG, World Bank and others, plus state-specific interventions. They stressed that health, nutrition, education, water, sanitation and social protection all need to work together.
On Power:
Then there’s the National Solar Super-Grid Initiative. The idea is to expand electricity access with decentralised solar generation tied into the national grid. Governors reckon it could boost industrialisation, energy security, state electricity markets and overall growth.
Abiodun said the Forum is fully behind power sector reforms and wants stronger partnerships with the Federal Government and development partners to improve infrastructure, social services and economic opportunities nationwide.
Bottom line from cbinews.tv: the governors think these reforms are make-or-break for security and sustainable growth.
