Akpabio calls for Senate emergency plenary amid electoral act row...
The Nigerian Senate is set to reconvene for an emergency plenary session on Tuesday, February 10, 2026.
CBI News reports that the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, directed lawmakers to resume sitting for the emergency session.
In a statement issued by the Clerk of the Senate, Emmanuel Odo, all senators were requested to be present at 12 noon.
“The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio has directed the reconvening of plenary for an emergency sitting on Tuesday, February 10th, 2026,” the statement read.
Odo urged all senators to attend the session.
The emergency sitting comes days after the Senate, on February 4, rejected a proposed amendment to the Electoral Act seeking to make real-time electronic transmission of election results mandatory.
The decision sparked criticism from activists and political groups, including former minister Oby Ezekwesili and the pan-Yoruba socio-political group Afenifere, who argued that the move could undermine electoral transparency ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Legal practitioners, including human rights lawyer Femi Falana, have also reportedly raised concerns over the implications of the Senate’s decision.
While the agenda of Tuesday’s emergency session has not been officially disclosed, there are indications that lawmakers may deliberate further on issues arising from the amendment and related public reactions.
