Amid rising attacks on Nigerians abroad, the National Assembly is taking decisive action—dispatching a high-level delegation to South Africa in a bold diplomatic push to confront xenophobia head-on.
CBI News reports that the Nigerian Senate has resolved to establish a joint ad hoc committee with the House of Representatives Nigeria to address the growing wave of xenophobic attacks against Nigerians in South Africa.
The decision follows mounting concerns over the safety and welfare of Nigerian citizens living and doing business in South Africa, where repeated incidents of violence and discrimination have sparked outrage back home.
According to lawmakers, the committee—expected to be led by the leadership of the National Assembly of Nigeria—will embark on a strategic fact-finding and diplomatic mission to South Africa. The aim is to engage directly with South African authorities and stakeholders in order to find lasting solutions to the recurring crisis.
As part of its mandate, the delegation will visit the Parliament of South Africa to formally convey Nigeria’s strong displeasure over the attacks and demand concrete steps to protect Nigerian nationals.
In addition, the Senate plans to send an official communication to the Speaker of the South African Parliament, reinforcing its concerns and seeking strengthened bilateral cooperation on citizen protection and conflict prevention.
Lawmakers have also indicated that Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs Nigeria will be invited to brief the Assembly on diplomatic efforts already undertaken, as well as provide updates on engagements with South African authorities.
The move signals a more assertive stance by Nigeria’s legislature in defending its citizens abroad and underscores the urgency of addressing xenophobia through sustained diplomatic dialogue and policy action.
With tensions lingering between both nations over repeated attacks, all eyes will be on the outcome of the committee’s visit and whether it can pave the way for improved relations and enhanced safety for Nigerians in South Africa.
