Opposition unity to challenge ruling APC....
Opposition political parties in Nigeria have agreed to field a single candidate for the 2027 presidential election, according to a communique issued after a national summit in Ibadan on Saturday.
The meeting, held at the Banquet Hall of the Oyo State Government House, brought together leaders from major opposition groups including the Peoples Democratic Party, Labour Party, and New Nigeria People’s Party.
Taminu Turaki, a factional national chairman of the PDP, who read the communique, said opposition leaders had resolved to work together to achieve a unified ticket aimed at “rescuing the nation and its long-suffering masses”.
The parties also said they would resist what they described as efforts by the ruling All Progressives Congress to impose a one-party state in Nigeria.
They also pledged to defend multi-party democracy.
The parties called on the National Assembly to urgently review the Electoral Act 2026.
They called for the removal of provisions they said undermine the integrity of elections and conflict with constitutional principles.
The communique further expressed reservations about the role of the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Joash Amupitan, in conducting the 2027 general elections, alleging bias and questioning his ability to ensure credible polls.
Opposition leaders also criticised INEC’s recently released guidelines, describing them as restrictive and calling for an extension of the deadline for party primaries to the end of July 2026.
Prominent political figures including Atiku Abubakar, Aminu Tambuwal, Peter Obi, Rabiu Kwankwaso and David Mark, among others attended the summit.
