A once-respected academic has been sentenced to over five years in prison after a U.S. court uncovered a shocking $1.4 million fraud involving funds meant for vulnerable children.

According to cbinews.tv, a United States District Court in Michigan has sentenced Nigerian-born professor Nkechy Ezeh to 70 months in prison after finding her guilty in a $1.4 million fraud case involving donor and taxpayer funds.

The court, presided over by Judge Hala Jarbou, did not hold back in its description of the case, calling Ezeh “a fraud and a thief” while detailing what was described as a deliberate and sustained scheme.

Ezeh, who previously served as the executive director of the Early Learning Neighbourhood Collaborative (ELNC), was found to have diverted funds that were originally meant to support early childhood education programmes in West Michigan. These resources were intended to benefit preschool children, particularly those from underserved and vulnerable communities.

Court documents revealed that the misappropriated money came from public and donor-backed sources specifically allocated to improve learning outcomes for disadvantaged children. Instead, the funds were allegedly redirected away from their intended purpose over time.

Judge Jarbou emphasized the seriousness of the offence, pointing to the impact on community-based education programmes and the children who depended on them. The court’s decision reflects growing concern around accountability in organisations managing donor-funded initiatives in the United States.

The case has drawn widespread attention due to both the scale of the financial misconduct and the fact that it involved programmes designed to support some of the most vulnerable members of society.
