Army says training help to ensure operational effectiveness...
The Nigerian Army on Monday stressed the need for intensified training to enhance operational effectiveness and sustain battlefield readiness across its formations.
Speaking at the opening of the 2026 Guards Brigade Corporals and Below Competition in Abuja, Isiaka Olatunji, Director of Support Services at Defence Headquarters, said continuous training remained central to military success.
“Training is not optional; it is essential for survival and success on the battlefield,” he said, adding that modern security operations demand constant skill development and rigorous field exercises.
Olatunji said the competition was designed to test the physical, mental and tactical capabilities of junior soldiers, particularly corporals and below, who play a key role in frontline operations.
“You are the ones who execute missions. You come face to face with the enemy at the tactical level,” he said.
He added that the exercise would help strengthen discipline, teamwork, resilience and overall combat readiness among troops.
The Guards Brigade, which has both ceremonial and operational duties in the Federal Capital Territory, remains a critical component of Nigeria’s defence structure, he said.
Commander of the brigade, Adebisi Onasanya, said the competition aligns with the Chief of Army Staff’s vision of building a more adaptive and combat-ready force.
He noted that participants would be assessed on weapon handling, physical fitness and decision-making, with results expected to help determine troop readiness for future deployments.
