Big shift from Abuja to Kano — and it’s all about getting closer to where the real work is happening.
So, here’s a pretty big move from the Federal Government — they’ve just shifted the Operational Headquarters of the National Agency for the Great Green Wall (NAGGW) from Abuja straight to Kano State.
Why? Well, according to Minister of Environment, Balarabe Abbas Lawal, it’s about cutting out the distance and getting the agency right where the action is. He announced it on Wednesday, calling it part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda to bring government bodies closer to the communities they actually serve.
As reported by cbinews.tv, the new HQ will now sit at the Afforestation Programme Coordinating Unit (APCU) office in Kano — a Federal Government facility that’s been around since 1988. Lawal reckons this should make a real difference in how projects are coordinated, monitored and delivered on the ground.
“The strategic move is aimed at significantly improving the Agency’s effectiveness in implementing the Great Green Wall Programme across Nigeria’s frontline states,” he said.
For context, the Great Green Wall Programme is an African Union initiative with over 11 countries on board. It’s all about tackling desertification, land degradation and climate change across the Sahel-Sahara belt.
In Nigeria, that means 11 frontline states: Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Jigawa, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Sokoto, Yobe and Zamfara.
Let’s be honest — running things from Abuja when all the core activities are up north wasn’t exactly ideal. Lawal pointed out that being based in Kano, right in the middle of the operational zone, should mean better monitoring, tighter coordination with state governments and local communities, and just more efficient delivery overall.
Plus, the APCU complex gives the agency a permanent base. No more temporary rented office in Abuja, which Lawal says had its own challenges.
He summed it up as part of a wider government push: put agencies closer to their operational areas, boost efficiency, and bring governance nearer to the people.
And he’s confident this relocation will strengthen how the Great Green Wall Programme is implemented — and ultimately serve communities across northern Nigeria better.
