2030 will make it the Centenary Celebration of the Games.
Nigeria has urged the Commonwealth to award it the hosting rights for the 2030 Centenary Games, saying the move would mark the first time the event is staged on African soil in its 100-year history.
The Commonwealth, a political association of mostly former territories of the British Empire, was formally established in 1926 and has since grown into a 56-member body.
In a statement addressed to the “Commonwealth Family”, Nigerian President Bola Tinubu said bringing the Games to Africa would send a powerful message of inclusion and unity.
“Nigeria is the gateway. Africa is the stage. The Commonwealth is the family. Let us make history together in 2030,” the statement said.
CBI News reports that the Nigerian leader argued that Africa’s absence as a host region undermines the Commonwealth’s identity and that awarding Nigeria the Games would “complete the circle of Commonwealth unity.”
“The dream must be realised. The time is now,” the statement added.
