IGP Disu approves establishment of new CTU bases in three locations.
Nigeria’s police say its has expanded their counter-terrorism capacity through specialised training and the approval of new operational bases aimed at strengthening responses to security threats across the country.
A statement by the acting spokesman of police, ACP Benjamin Hundeyin said the initiative forms part of efforts by the Nigeria Police Force to improve the operational readiness of personnel in its Counter Terrorism Unit amid ongoing threats from terrorism, banditry and other serious crimes.
According to him, the two-week Close Quarter Battle and Intelligence Analysis programme trained 56 officers drawn from CTU formations nationwide. The exercise was conducted in collaboration with the British High Commission through the Office of the Counter Terrorism Regional Coordinator for West Africa.
Participants were trained in modern counter-terrorism tactics, intelligence analysis and operational strategies aimed at strengthening coordinated responses to emerging security challenges.
Speaking at the closing ceremony in Abuja, Lieutenant Colonel Ian Tyler of the British High Commission’s counter-terrorism office commended the officers for their professionalism and urged them to apply the knowledge gained in field operations. He reaffirmed the British government’s commitment to continued collaboration with Nigerian authorities on regional security.
Nigeria’s Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Rilwan Disu, represented by Assistant Inspector-General Akoh Gabriel, said the training reflected the force’s determination to continually strengthen the operational capacity of its officers to address evolving security threats.
The statement said as part of measures to reinforce the national counter-terrorism framework, Disu approved the establishment of new CTU bases in Madagali, Ikot Odo and Ode-Remo.
The police chief also authorised the deployment of additional CTU personnel to strategic operational locations across the country to strengthen rapid response capability and expand operational coverage.
