No Ebola cases in Nigeria yet, but FAAN isn’t taking chances. Airports are now screening passengers from high-risk regions as the rare Bundibugyo strain sparks fresh outbreaks in Central Africa.
Nigeria is tightening up at the airports after fresh Ebola outbreaks were reported in parts of Central Africa. The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) says it’s rolled out preventive measures across all international airports to stop the virus from slipping into the country. FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Henry Agbebire said that the agency is working hand-in-hand with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), Port Health Services, and other key partners to beef up surveillance at entry points.
So what’s actually happening on the ground? Right now, passengers are being screened for Ebola symptoms. And if anyone looks suspicious, Agbebire says they’ll be “promptly isolated and subjected to secondary health checks in line with established national and international health protocols.” FAAN has also stepped up monitoring of travellers coming in from high-risk regions and reinforced emergency response procedures at airports. Staff have been given extra sensitisation training too — the idea is to catch anything early and respond fast.
The good news? Agbebire stressed that “there is currently no confirmed case of Ebola in Nigeria.” But the country is staying on high alert as part of its preventive public health strategy. “FAAN remains vigilant and fully committed to safeguarding public health and maintaining safe airport operations,” he added.
For passengers, the message is simple: stay calm, cooperate with screening, and report any symptoms to health officials straight away. This all comes as several African countries ramp up containment efforts. The renewed outbreaks are linked to the rare Bundibugyo strain, which has already triggered regional travel advisories and increased global monitoring.
