The move to regulate TikTok is generating opinions among Nigerians...

The Nigerian Government says it plans to regulate the operations of the short-video platform TikTok citing concerns over harmful content, data protection, and tax compliance.

National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) Director General Kashifu Abdullahi says this was important as the social media platform is consuming too much of young people’s time and diverting them from productive activities.

NITDA also revealed that the plan was to safeguard users’ data, promote responsible digital engagement, and preserve national interests.

This move to regulate TikTok has generated divided opinions among Nigerians.

For Williams Asukuo, a Student, it was high time the government acted as content on the platform was already getting out of hand.

A makeup artist, Mable Yunana, who welcomed the government's move, said the contents should be tailored towards education and business promotion.

Richard Mgbechikwelu, a content creator, said the government should look at ways to support its citizens to be more productive rather than focus on taxes and regulating TikTok.

CBI News reports that the Director General of NITDA expressed deep concern that TikTok’s hold on Nigerian youth is becoming detrimental to education, innovation, and creativity.

He said the app was “eating youth’s time” calling for more meaningful and productive use of digital platforms.

Experts say Nigeria’s plan to regulate TikTok marks a broader effort to bring order to the country’s social-media landscape.

While the government says the move is for accountability, creators and rights advocates fear overreach
