Big win for Nigeria's fisheries sector! A new trade protocol with China is set to open the doors of the massive Chinese market to Nigerian aquatic products.

Nigeria and China have just signed a fresh agreement that could be a game-changer for Nigeria's export earnings.
The deal is a protocol on the inspection and quarantine requirements for wild aquatic products exported from Nigeria to China. In simple terms, it sets the standard rules for how Nigeria's wild-caught seafood will be checked and approved for the Chinese market.
The agreement was signed in Abuja by the Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai, and the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Agricultural Quarantine Service (NAQS), Dr Vincent Isegbe.
According to Ambassador Yu, this is more than just paperwork. He explained that the protocol provides the institutional framework needed to implement China’s zero-tariff policy for the 53 African countries it has diplomatic ties with.
“The signing marks an important institutional arrangement for implementing China’s zero-tariff policy for the 53 African countries with which China has diplomatic relations,” Yu said.
What does this mean for Nigeria? A lot, actually. The new arrangement creates clear, straightforward procedures for getting Nigerian aquatic products into China. This is expected to significantly expand Nigeria's agricultural exports, give the local fisheries sector a much-needed boost, and ultimately increase foreign exchange earnings.
The ambassador also noted that the protocol will inject fresh momentum into the economic and trade cooperation between both nations.
“The Protocol will also inject fresh impetus into the deepening of China-Nigeria economic and trade cooperation, bringing greater opportunities and tangible benefits to our two peoples,” he added.
