Nigeria joins 106 nations in UN vote backing Ukraine, calling for ceasefire, peace talks and respect for sovereignty on invasion anniversary.
Nigeria joined 106 other member states at the United Nations General Assembly to adopt a resolution expressing support for Ukraine on the fourth anniversary of Russia’s invasion.
The resolution, titled “Support for lasting peace in Ukraine,” was passed during an emergency special session with 107 votes in favour, 12 against and 51 abstentions, including the United States.
It called for a comprehensive, just and lasting peace, an immediate and unconditional ceasefire, exchange of prisoners of war, and the return of civilians forcibly transferred, including children. The Assembly also reaffirmed its commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity within internationally recognised borders.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres described the war as a violation of the UN Charter and international law, warning that the longer it continues, the more devastating it becomes for civilians and global security.
Ukraine’s Deputy Foreign Minister, Mariana Betsa, told the United Nations Security Council that peace must begin with an immediate ceasefire, stronger sanctions and binding security guarantees, insisting that Ukraine’s sovereignty was non-negotiable.
Russia’s representative, however, rejected the framing of the meeting, accusing Western states of prolonging the conflict and maintaining that any settlement must address what Moscow described as the “root causes” of the war.
CBI News notes that the vote underscores continued divisions within the international community as the conflict enters its fifth year.
