After more than a year away from home, 434 men, women and children from Ngoshe in Borno are finally free, and Governor Zulum says President Tinubu’s direct intervention made it happen.
Governor Professor Babagana Umara Zulum was in Pulka on Monday and he didn't hold back on the praise. He thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for helping secure the release of 434 people from Ngoshe community in Gwoza Local Government Area, who were abducted by suspected Boko Haram insurgents over a year ago.
The numbers break down like this: 357 came home in the latest big batch, while about 77 others had been freed quietly in smaller groups over the past few months. Add it up, and that's the whole 434.
Zulum said Tinubu's commitment to stabilise Borno, and Nigeria more broadly, really shifted things. According to him, the President's push helped speed up the whole operation.
He also gave credit where it's due: the Nigerian Armed Forces, the Office of the National Security Adviser, the DSS, and other security agencies for their well-coordinated work. And he didn't forget the locals on the ground, the Civilian Joint Task Force, Forest Guards, vigilantes and hunters, calling their role instrumental.
What's next for Ngoshe? Zulum says the state has already sunk millions of naira into rehabilitating the community, and they're working hand-in-hand with the military to make sure anyone who wants to return can do so safely and with dignity.
For now, the freed residents are being looked after, food and non-food relief items are being distributed on Zulum's orders, and they're all receiving medical and psychosocial support before they are reintegrated into their families.
