NFF reduces Remo Stars’ home ground ban to five matches after partially upholding the club’s appeal...
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has reduced Remo Stars’ home ground ban to five matches after partially upholding the club’s appeal against sanctions imposed by the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) over crowd violence during their clash with Ikorodu City.
In a statement released on Friday following a disciplinary committee meeting held earlier in the week, the federation confirmed that while the original financial penalties remain, the directive requiring Remo Stars to play all remaining home matches away from Ikenne has been reviewed.
CBI News reports that the committee found that Remo Stars failed to provide adequate and effective security during the January 14 fixture, which descended into chaos after the final whistle. Supporters of the home side were found to have attacked Ikorodu City fans with dangerous weapons, resulting in injuries and damage to the visitors’ team bus.
Investigations also revealed that objects were thrown onto the pitch, causing two stoppages during the match.
The committee concluded that the conduct of the crowd was capable of bringing the game into disrepute.
Consequently, the NFF upheld a ₦2 million fine for inadequate security and an additional ₦1 million fine for throwing objects onto the field of play.
A further ₦2 million fine, imposed as compensation for injuries sustained by away supporters and damage to Ikorodu City’s bus, was also maintained.
However, the venue sanction was reduced.
In its ruling, the committee stated: “An order that all subsequent home fixtures of Remo Stars FC for the remainder of the 2025/2026 season be played in the Lekan Salami Stadium is hereby reduced to a five-match ban to run concurrently from the date of the sanction.”
The federation added that the decision was made without prejudice to Remo Stars’ right to pursue further appeals.
The original sanctions were imposed by the NPFL on January 22 following incidents during matchday 20.
Under the revised ruling, Remo Stars, who have eight home games left this season, will now play four of those matches at their Ikenne base.
The club has already begun serving the ban, having hosted Kun Khalifat in Ibadan on matchday 23.
Upcoming home fixtures against Plateau United, Abia Warriors and Katsina United will also be played at the Lekan Salami Stadium, with the match against Nasarawa United expected to conclude the five-match ban by mid-March.
Thereafter, Remo Stars are set to return to Ikenne for games against Kwara United, Shooting Stars, Niger Tornadoes and Bayelsa United.
On the field, the club remains under pressure. Remo Stars currently sit 17th on the NPFL table with 27 points, occupying the final relegation spot after recording just one win in their last seven matches.
